Hurricane Aftermath in Cuba Part 2 |
|
|
|
I am getting some reports back from Cuba and we should have a more specific plan for help in the next 24 hours. I am translating what I got today as the guys on the ground are moving throughout the country.
This note is from Fernando Filgueira who is traveling with Felix visiting the Evangelists and church-planters in the East rig
ht now. They are in the area of Bayamo; Guantanamo; and Holguin -- all points east.
"Thank you for your support and your prayers, I am in the East visiting missionaries in their fields
. I have alarming pictures of houses that were destroyed and many of the brethren are sleeping in the open air. It is a very crude sight. In a town called Palenque (Pronounced Palenke) church services are held in the shade of the only tree that was not knocked down by the hurricane; I have taken pictures and recorded some video.
As I mentioned in my brief e-mail, the government provided roofs and wooden posts. Now it is up to the people to rebuild [as they are able].
I think they go a long way on the encour agement and the small salary we send them, but we have seen that there is severe lack of many things. They need clothing and food and medicine, etc.
Rebuilding is entirely up to them. They need to band together and help each other to rebuild. I preached and gave them words of comfort and encouragement.
I will send you a budget for some of the things that are most needful, and a list of the most important medicines. There is no Ibuprofen, nor Pentoxifiline [for anemic people], and anti diarrhea medications [due to water contamination].
I will write tomorrow with a budget, I think we can do a lot with little.
Fernando
