I just got back from Cuba—and I’m inspired all over again seeing firsthand the faith and work of our church-planters!
They’re making heroic efforts to get the Word out and bring the harvest in while there is time to gather it. I can’t wait to tell you about two of these faithful workers in particular. Their lives prove that God still works today as He did in biblical times.
The first is Bebo, who is 78 years old, who started with us five years ago. He was a military hero of the Communist revolution and of the Battle of Playa Giron, with a chest full of medals. But Bebo realized his medals were all symbols of achievement for man’s wars, with nothing of eternal value. He wanted to do something to build toward heaven so he would have something to show for his journey through life.
When he asked if he could serve with us, it seemed that to hire this aging veteran would be like providing “geriatric relief.” But I knew about people like you who love the Lord and who would give a definite nod to such a man, whether for Kingdom-building or merely out of compassion.
Now five years later, we see the end result! During my visit to Cuba, Bebo approached me with his typical enthusiasm (remember, he was 78) to ask if we will help him build an auditorium FOR HIS FOURTH CHURCH PLANT! I am absolutely amazed. To him it is simply business: “People are awaiting, and time’s a-wasting!”
Praise God for this man’s heart! At the same time, I shudder to think what might have been lost if I had simply dismissed Bebo as someone just looking for a retirement handout!
Update: The above was written in 2006. In 2007, Bebo went to be with the Lord. His request in his final days was, “just a little more time so I can win more people for Christ before I go.” May we, “number our days” that we may present a heart of wisdom.
